THE FEMALE HORMONES AND THEIR ROLE.

ESTROGEN

Estrogens are the major group of hormones that contribute to the sexual and reproductive development in women. Estrogen is primarily secreted by the ovaries. This hormone is essential for regulating the menstrual cycle.

Low estrogen levels can result in:

-vaginal atrophy

-urinary incontinence

-fatigue

-depression

-low sex drive

-mood swings

Optimizing estrogen levels can help protect against heart disease, osteoporosis, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, colon cancer, and macular degeneration

TESTOSTERONE

Testosterone is usually just associated with men but women also produce this hormone naturally at lower concentrations. Low levels of testosterone in women can contribute to similar symptoms that men experience when going through this unavoidable deterioration of their major sex hormone. Symptoms like fatigue, low sex drive, depression, and lack of energy.

Benefits of testosterone replacement:

-Improved energy

-Decrease in visceral fat

-Improved sense of well being

-Improved strength and endurance

-Improved bone density

-Improved sexual function

-Helps protect the cardiovascular system

MENOPAUSE

Pre-menopause: consists of the childbearing years when menstrual cycles are regular and there are no symptoms of menopause.

Perimenopause: is the transitional stage leading into menopause which typically begins in a woman’s 40s and can last for many years. Estrogen levels start to decrease during this time and is associated with the onset of menopause symptoms. Common perimenopause symptoms include: Irregular periods, mood changes, hot flashes, night sweats, decreased sex drive, vaginal dryness, headaches, difficulty concentrating.

Menopause: can present at any age and is defined by a woman not having a menstrual cycle for 12 consecutive months. The ovaries have essentially stopped functioning at this point and no longer release eggs. Hot flashes are the most common complaint for women going through menopause.

Post-menopause: is the final stage of this process that will continue through the remainder of life. This is the time when many health risks are high due to the progressive decline in estrogen levels.
